More NASCAR for Phoenix
Thursday June 3, 2004
Officials of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, known to race fans as NASCAR, have announced a new schedule for the 36-race 2005 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series. The changes were made to keep pace with the increasing demands of NASCAR's nationwide growth in popularity. So what does this mean for Phoenix? Not only will we have NASCAR racing in November, but now we'll also have NASCAR in April. Woo hoo!
NASCAR racing takes place at Phoenix International Raceway ("PIR"), which is located in the Southwest Valley. Phoenix International Raceway's new race will be on Saturday night, April 23, 2005.
In 2003, NASCAR announced "Realignment 2004 and Beyond." The plan calls for regular review of race dates and locations in order to continue bringing the most competitive racing in the world to the widest possible audience, and providing the kind of value that has proven NASCAR to be one of the very best sports properties. This gave local authorities and PIR the opportunity to convince NASCAR officials that the Valley and NASCAR fans in the Southwest were ready for a second event.
NASCAR at PIR is one of the Valley's premier events, attracting more than 100,000 race fans to the November race. It is estimated that having another event in April will add another $175 million to the local economy, and boost tourism in the month following Cactus League Baseball, which, up until now, has signalled the end of the tourist season.
