From The Inbox: What's an FBR?
Tuesday February 1, 2005
I get about 20 emails each January (for the past couple of years) with the same question. It is a very logical one, but the answer isn't easy to remember, so here it is, plain and simple.
Q: What happened to The Phoenix Open, and what does the FBR in The FBR Open mean? A: That big, famous PGA golf tournament held at the beginning of each year in Scottsdale, Arizona used to be called The Phoenix Open. The Title Sponsor of the event is now the Friedman, Billings, Ramsey Group, Inc. It is an investment banking, institutional brokerage, asset management company headquartered in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. That company's logo/acronym is FBR. All that means is that FBR has arranged, for a sponsorship, to have the golf tournament name changed to reflect their significant participation.
So there you have it. By the way, I've never received even one email asking why The Phoenix Open wasn't called The Scottsdale Open....
