Say Hi to Enrique, Javier, Victor, Jorge and Gilbert
Tuesday April 26, 2005
Quintuplets were born today to a surrogate mother in Mesa, Arizona. When she agreed to be a surrogate mother for Louisa Gonzalez and Enrique Moreno, Teresa Anderson had no idea that she would carry and deliver 5 babies.
The babies weighed in at between 3.1 pounds and 3.8 pounds. One of the boys, Javier, was diagnosed in the womb with a rare heart defect that will require surgery within a few days.
Originally, Ms. Anderson agreed to be a surrogate mother for a fee of $15,000. No one expected that all five implanted embryos would become fetuses. After discovering that, all parties agreed that they would not selectively eliminate any of the embryos. Ms. Anderson decided not to charge the parents of the quints because of the financial challenges they'll face raising the five boys.
