Sunset Fire
Wednesday June 22, 2005
The BLM-Phoenix Field Office has reported that the Sunset Fire that started on June 20, 2005 just north of Black Canyon City was human caused. Nearly 7,000 acres are involved, and containment is expected on June 23rd. Tall grasses and strong winds fueled the fire, prompting the closure of I-17. a major route from Phoenix to Flagstaff and points in between. About 250 people are fighting this fire.
This is one of three large fires burning at this moment. The Goldwater and Aztec fires are also active. The Sunset Fire proves that the metro Phoenix area can be directly impacted by wildfires. Not only is it rather close to the Valley, but the merging of two smaller fires, the Bronco and the Humboldt, has threatened Tonto Hills, an unincorporated community of 120 families northeast of Scottsdale. Carefree residents are getting ready to evacuate when given the word.
These won't be the last wildfires in Arizona this summer. Check here to read more about wildfires, and how to get updated wildfire information in Arizona.
