Cave Creek Complex Fire Still A Major Threat

Thursday June 30, 2005
The Rodeo-Chedeski fire was the largest fire recorded in Arizona, burning over 468,000 acres of forest habitat in less than one month in June 2002. The Cave Creek Fire Complex has now burned nearly 200,000 acres. There has been zero containment on the north/northwest end of the fire, but the south side is 40% contained. Although there have been no evacuations in the Pine and Strawberry areas near Payson, or in Camp Verde, those communities are still in danger. Firefighters continue to try to control the fire by keeping it west of the Verde River.

Periodic closures of I-17 seem unavoidable this holiday weekend. If your plans call for you to celebrate the 4th of July up north, please check road restrictions and plan accordingly.
