Phoenix Golf—You Get What You Pay For

There are some great summer bargains when it comes to golf. Summer rates mean that that average Joe or Jane can afford a round of golf, kids can get out on 18 holes when it isn't too busy, and newbies to the game can play without having to worry as much about crowds or embarrassment. Of course, there's a down side to all that....

I went out last week and played a local course for $20 including cart. It was an OK course, although many of the fairways were pretty bare. We saw a refreshment cart twice during the round, but only once were we able to get wet towels--near the end of the round. We played behind a three-some that didn't play all that well, but I guess they wanted their money's worth so they played from the championship tees. No surprise--we were waiting for them to find their errant shots on every hole. There were a fair number of kids playing. It was certainly a good deal at 20 bucks, though.

Yesterday, I played 18 holed at The Raven in South Phoenix. This summer they are offering a Golf & Gift special. For $45 you play a round, and choose from a slection of gifts. I chose a logo golf cap, but there were others. The course was in great shape. The greens had been punched about a week ago, and were a bit sandy, but predictable. The refreshment cart came by 4 times. The Guest Services cart brought wet, rose-scented towels twice. The carts are new, and in great shape. Ice coolers with a couple of Dasani waters were provided. Range balls were included. Staff was friendly. Even in 112°, we had a great time. It was well worth the price. Watch those bunkers, though--they are huge and deep!
