Arizona: Pleased and Proud to Assist

Saturday September 17, 2005
The federal government will be reimbursing Arizona for some of the expenses incurred as a result of the assistance provided to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. When disaster strikes, it is heartwarming to know that people, and even bureaucracies, can act quickly and decisively to provide help to friends and strangers alike. Want a little outline of what Arizona and Arizonans did to help during Operation Good Neighbor?

Here is Operation Good Neighbor, Arizona's hurricane relief effort, by the numbers.
  • On Sunday, Sept. 4, 576 evacuees - including 89 children - stayed at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Wednesday morning, 147 adults and nine children remained there. The rest have found permanent or temporary housing, and my goal is to set a date for the shelters closure by Friday.
  • On Sept. 7, 89 evacuees arrived in Tucson and stayed at the Tucson Convention Center. All of those evacuees have found permanent housing or temporary housing elsewhere and the Convention Center shelter closed Sunday night.
  • More than 90 evacuees have found jobs, and approximately 70 of those were attained through the job fair sponsored by the state's Department of Commerce. More than 60 Arizona employers attended the job fair.
  • The Arizona Department of Transportation has issued 389 identification cards, including driver's licenses, to evacuees who lost their identification during the evacuation process.
  • The Department of Housing has more than 125 files open, which means 125 individuals and families have been provided with three housing options. Dozens of families have been placed into housing through work by the state and faith-based organizations.
  • Four children who were at out-of-state shelters were reunited with their mothers who were staying at the Coliseum.
  • One hundred and five members of the Arizona National Guard's 855th Military Police Company are in Louisiana, and another 15 are on their way to the region. The Company is providing law enforcement support outside of Baton Rouge, La.
  • A 20-member civil support team arrived in the Gulf Coast region Monday to provide assistance on hazardous materials cleanup.
  • Approximately 130 Guard personnel are assisting Operation Good Neighbor efforts here in Arizona.
Good job, Arizona!
