Phoenix GuitarMania

Wednesday October 26, 2005
Have you ever seen a 10 foot tall guitar? The one pictured here is located at Terminal 4 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, but there are many of them strewed about town. It's called GuitarMania, and it's the latest Phoenix public art project. These huge Fender Stratocaster guitars can be found in downtown Phoenix at the America West Arena, in Glendale at Murphy Park, in Tempe at P.F. Chang's, in Scottsdale at Casino Arizona, and many more locations.

There are more than 75 painted guitars of GuitarMania displayed around the Greater Phoenix area. Companies and individuals were invited to sponsor a guitar, which was then painted by a celebrity or famous artict. The one pictured here was done by Linae Frei and sponsored by America West Airlines (now US Airways). On February 4, 2006, all the GuitarMania guitars will be auctioned, with the proceeds benefiting Valley Big Brothers and Big Sisters along with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum.
