Who's a millionaire? No, this isn't an introduction to a game show. Look around you. That person in the waiting room at the doctor's office? The man picking up his dry cleaning? How about that couple eating at Sweet Tomatoes? Any one of them could be a millionaire. In fact, we have quite a few millionaires in Maricopa County, and they don't all live in Paradise Valley. As far as counties are concerned, Maricopa County was listed as having the fourth largest number of millionaires in America.
Here are the ten counties with the highest number of millionaires:
This study was performed by TNS Financial Services, a market research and polling firm. Don't think, though, that just because you bought your home in 1980 for $200,000, and it appreciated by about 500% since then, that you are counted as one of the 106,210 millionaires in Maricopa County. The study only included households with a net worth of at least $1 million not including the primary residence.
Factoids About Millionaires Included In This Survey
- the average net worth, not including the principal residence, of about $2.2 million, of which about $1.4 million was in liquid or investable assets.
- the median age of the head of the household is 58
- 45% percent of millionaire household heads are retired.
- 19% own at least part of a professional practice (doctor, dentist, lawyer, etc.) or a privately held business.
- 46% own investment real estate like a second home or rental properties.
There are also a few of you out there who took this money-making thing to the extreme. We actually have four billionaires in Maricopa County: Bennett Dorrance, John Sperling, Peter Sperling, and Arturo Moreno.
