Arizona Wildfire Burns in Sedona
Arizona had its first significant forest fire of the year very early in 2006. It was called the February Fire, and it burned north of Payson, Arizona. We knew that this would be a difficult summer in Arizona for wildfires, since we didn't get much rain this past winter. Right now, there are six wildfires burning in Arizona, including the Brins Fire which is only 5% contained and has burned about 1,500 acres just about 2 miles from Sedona, Arizona. All of Oak Creek Canyon has been evacuated. More than 450 firefighters are working on Brins.
People who are unfamiliar with our state might think that Arizona is all desert, but actually there are six national forests in Arizona. You can get more information about Arizona's forest lands, and find current wildfire resources, here.
Sedona, Arizona is most known for its beautiful red rocks. Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon are popular day trip and weekend destinations for Phoenix residents, as well as a must-see for tourists. The Sedona/Oak Creek Canyon area is about 125 miles north of Phoenix.
Update June 21, 2006: The Brins Fire has now taken about 2,500 acres and has reached the main road, Highway 89A. 5% containment reported.
