Tempe Symphony Orchestra Free Concerts

Tempe Symphony Orchestra The Tempe Symphony Orchestra will celebrate its 32nd concert season in 2006 - 2007 with four free performances in Tempe. Started in 1975, the main purpose of the Tempe Symphony Orchestra has been to provide musical enjoyment and continuing education for the many talented orchestral adult musicians in the Valley who wish to participate in advanced orchestral performance activities. Dr. Richard E. Strange is the Symphony's founding Music Director and Conductor.

Here is the schedule for the 2006-2007 concert season.

Date: October 9, 2006
Location: Boyle Auditorium, McClintock High School, 1830 E. Del Rio Drive
What you'll hear:

  • "Froissart Overture," Edward Elgar (1857-1934)
  • "Kol Nidrie,Adagio On Hebrew Melodies, Op. 47," Max Bruch (1838-1920) with Carol Matthusen, cello soloist
  • "Symphony No. 2 in C Minor (Little Russian)," Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)
Date: November 27, 2006
Location: Gammage Auditorium, Arizona State University, 1200 S. Forest Ave.
(northeast corner of Apache Boulevard and Mill Avenue)
What you'll hear:
  • "Triple Concerto (mvt. 1)" Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) with Katie McLin, violin; Thomas Landschoot, cello; and Andrew Campbell, piano
  • "Church Windows (w/organ)," Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936), with Homer Ferguson, Organ
  • "Great Choruses from the German Requiem," Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) with Karen Hendricks Crawford, Soprano, and the Deseret Chorale

What you'll hear:
Celebrating Stravinsky's 125th birthday
  • "Old American Songs (set 1)," Aaron Copland (1900-1990) with Jenny Armendt, Mezzo-Soprano
  • "Circus Polka (for the Barnum & Bailey Band)," Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971)
  • "Symphony No. 1 in E Minor, Op.39," Jean Sibelius (1865-1957)
Date: April 23 2007
Location: Boyle Auditorium, McClintock High School, 1830 E. Del Rio Drive
What you'll hear:
  • "Valses nobles et sentimentales," Maurice Ravel (1875-1937)
  • "Concerto for Piano, No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 2," Charles Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) with Walter Cosand, Piano
  • "English Dances (Set 2)," Malcolm Arnold (1921- )
  • "The Cowboys," John Williams (1932- )

I printed the schedule of free symphony concerts for a friend. He asked me if I could edit the dates for the last two concerts to show 2007. We laughed and I told him that I didn’t think I had edit priviledges on this page. Thank you for posting the schedule!
