In November 2006 voters in Arizona will address Proposition 300 sponsored by State Senator Dean Martin. That measure would make changes related to eligibility for state funded services, basically stating that persons who are not in this country lawfully may not avail themselves of state funded programs or financial aid. Poll: Will you vote in favor of Proposition 300?
1) Yes, Arizona should preclude illegal immigrants from accessing state funded education and child care.
2) No, denying those benefits to people living and working in Arizona will cause more problems.
Proposition 300 includes provides that:
- only United States citizens, legal residents or persons otherwise lawfully present in this country are eligible to participate in adult education classes offered by the Arizona Department of Education.
- a person who is not in this country lawfully may not be classified as an in-state student or resident for community college or state university tuition purposes.
- a state university or community college student who is not a in this country lawfully is not entitled to financial assistance paid with state funds.
- restrict eligibility for child care assistance to parents, guardians and caretakers who are in this country lawfully.
- require that the family literacy program, the adult education class requirements, the state university and community college financial assistance requirements and the child care assistance program be enforced without regard to race, religion, gender, ethnicity or national origin.
Advocates of Proposition 300 say that tax dollars of our citizens and legal residents should not be used to support those who have chosen to violate our laws. We should not be subsidizing students who are here illegally in college level and adult education programs at the expense of the taxpayers of Arizona.
Opponents to Proposition 300 say that this proposition requires state and school personnel to become immigration police. Securing the border, reforming work visa permits, and identifying the millions of those in this country without proper documentation is what will eliminate frustration for both employers and the public.

Vote No for Proposition 300!!! No matter what your view is on the illegal immigration issue, we need those who live here to speak English. This proposition will take those classes away. These classes should be expanded not cut. I hear people say all the time, “Why don’t they learn English?” Many are trying. I teach English classes for Mesa Public Schools and we have 800 current students and hundreds on waiting lists. They know how important learning English is. We as a society need everyone to learn English, the teachers and schools that teach immigrant children, need their parents to learn English. Taking away these classes is just plain stupid and will hurt everyone.
No on prop 300
It solves nothing. What we need is to secure borders and a pathway for these people to get legal. with propositions like this nothing is accomplished but dreams been taken away to innocent students who there only crime is having a dream and getting an education
NO ON PROP 300 GIVE OUR STUDENTS LEGAL OR ILLEGAL THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A BETTER LIFE BY HAVING A GOOD EDUCATION
While I agree that we all benefit from Illegal Immigrants learning English, I am apposed to paying for it with my tax dollars. Illegal immigrants should be paying for those classes out of their own pockets. I would rather see my tax dollars go words Spanish classes for citizens then English classes for illegal Immigrants.
YES ON PROP 300! We are overrun by ILLEGALS in Arizona and this country. Why should they get ANYTHING for FREE at the taxpayers expense when taxpayers don’t get FREEBIES? ILLEGALS are a burden on all city, state, and federal resources paid by U.S. taxpayers and it’s time for U.S. taxpayers to get our message across that WE ARE TIRED OF PAYING FOR ANY SOCIAL SERVICES FOR ILLEGALS!!!!
If I want to learn Spanish can I go to Mexico and they will teach me for free? I work with a family from Norway and their children – after only being in this country one year, speak fluent English – no classes! Imagine that. Yes on 300!
Illegals pay taxes to! Vote NO!
NO on Prop 300! Ignorance begets ignorance. Sandra, YES, absolutely, if you travel to Mexico there are classes available so you, too, can learn a foreign language. Apparently you and your ignorant comrads voting YES would prefer to live in a society full of KNOW-NOTHINGS. This prop is blatant racism reminiscent of Nazi Germany. How can you even imagine solving the problems with undocumented immigrants by effectively denying them a chance to learn English and be contributing members of society. Shame on all those who vote YES on prop 300. Shame on your ignorance.
This is in reply to Josh who said illegals should be paying for their English classes. Many of my students would be willing to pay for their classes but prop 300 has no provision for this possibility. It completly prohibits classes without any other choice. For years Adult Education in Arizona has received budget cuts from the national and state level. We have asked the state if we could charge even a registration fee for our classes and they always tell us no. So is prop 300 really about money? I believe it’s really about politics and racism.
Prop 300 is not about money. if money is all that matters to you i feel sorry for you. how can you care more about a green piece of paper than a human being. regarless of illegal or legal. all these prop against illegals in the country brought me to one conclucion…. “human rights” is a joke. how can you tell someone “i have a good life but you cant” this is what we say by these prop and fed laws. This country is already great what about all the others in the world. there is people dying in sudan and we only think about illegals. did we not learn from rwanda. sadly this will never end and history will repeat itself.
how can you want others to have a better life when you want props like these to be approved. it doesnt make sense. you want illegals out and no more to come in. my family had to wait 11 years just to get a residency card. that time we struggled so much. i didnt learn english in a year but two. we want to help each other out but just those who are “legal”, because only those matter to yourselves. what about all those others that also contribute to this country. Where is morality in all of this. Money is like Jesus said to give to cesar that of which is of cesar. We are all children of God and yet we make boundaries on who we want to help. how can you turn your back on someone that wants a better life and not struggle all of their life. If you lived in a third world country wouldnt you dream of america. if you got here would you just ignore the rest that stayed back or couldnt make it. i do not support prop 300 no matter how much money is involved. What are your values?
Vote NO!! There are immigrants in this country that are paying taxes and are getting money taken away that they will never get back. There are also ILLEGAL students that work much harder for an education because they know how limited and precious it is.
History will indeed repeat itself.
I think Prop 300 is a necessary law because of the need to make education available to the citizens of the United States. If these people who want illegals to learn how to speak English, they should pay for their education and have them legalized. However, that cannot be possible because illegal immigrants are just that, illegal! Besides, what public assistance they are on is paid by our tax dollars and these people do breed like rabbits, straining that assistance to the limit. It’s bad enough that their children are considered legal just for being born here, this makes the parents legal too and they don’t even try to learn the language. The reason why I say this is because I know a family that has been here for over ten years and the mother still speaks her language and doesn’t even try to speak English, is that what you call adapting? I don’t!
As that thtere is really no comprehensive plan to deal with the problem of illeagle immigration within the federal government, it is up to the local governments to try something, if nothing more than to find out if the program will work as intended. Realize that there is an immigration problem here in Arizona, and something must be done. Those who want you to vote “no” on prop 300, have yet to come up with an alternate plan for dealing with the immigration problem. As a retired military person, I have lived for years at a time in countries around the world, and I have seen that other countries do not extend the services to illeagle immigrants that the U.S. does. Yes, this country is made upp of immigrants, but the arguement that our great relatives came here illeagly is a moot arguement. It is comparing apples to oranges. In other countries you have to learn their language in order to survive, They do not go out of their way to speak yours. If you want to live in the U.S. you should enter legally and learn the language, follow our rules. If not, do something to make your own country a place that you want to live and raise a family in.
This is comment is to “GUYS” and anyone else it applies to. First of all, if you’re going to base your opinion on a single family you know, then I pity your stereotypical ignorance. “These people” were before you or any Anglo, just remember that. Oh and by the way, “Illegal” is not a noun maybe YOU should take some English classes. Regarding education, it IS available to those citizens who want. Lets keep in mind, these are merit based scholarships not financial grants. No human is illegal, nor does a two-year old do something illegal when his/her parents cross over. Also, this proposition is completely unconstitutional, which might be the reason Arizona is the only state doing this. OH, and your “tax dollars” you’ll be seeing again. Undocumented Migrants pay taxes and will NEVER see that money again. Please people before you speak of education, leave your racist ignorance at home.
No; this policy needs to be followed up and revised because:
It’s irresponsible to pay for illegal immigrants to go to school, etc. but; we also shouldn’t deny people the right to better their lives if they can pay for it themselves.
