Will it be for the last time? The
Safeway International has been around for quite a few years, but under various names. The most recognizable were probably the Standard Register PING held at Moon Valley Country Club, and the name by which it has been known since 2004, the Safeway International. Since it found what seems a perfect home at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club, it has grown and prospered.

Last year more golf fans attended the Safeway International than any other LPGA event. We have been used to boasting that every top woman professional golfer comes to play in this event, and this year will be no different; it was announced that all 75 of the top 75 woman golfers in the LPGA will play here this week, including Lorena Ochoa and Annika Sorenstam. Charities will benefit to the tune of about $1 million.
So it might have been something of a shock when Safeway announced about a week ago that this will be the final year of their sponsorship. Did it get too expensive for Safeway? I don't know, but the organizers of the tournament say they'll find a new sponsor. I hope so, and I hope they can keep the event at Superstition Mountain.
If you plan to go to the Safeway International this week, here are the details and some photos from past events. The forecast right now is for low 80s and sunshine all week. Put on the sunscreen, grab a golf cap, and head out to Superstition Mountain.
Tip: Be aware that this is also the last week for the Arizona Renaissance Festival. Both of these events use the same road, so leave extra time -- it will be a busy place!
