When the fireworks are over, it's time to start thinking about back-to-school activities.

One of those important tasks is to make sure that your child has all the necessary and required immunizations to attend school next month. In addition to regularly scheduled immunization clinics for Phoenix area children, there are two special events that have come to my attention.

Saturday, July 19, 2008. The City of Phoenix is sponsoring the annual "Back to School and Health Fair" from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Carl Hayden High School, 3333 W. Roosevelt Ave. in Phoenix. The Back-to-School and Health Fair provides young people with free immunizations, physical and dental check-ups, free backpacks and a free haircut. The Back to School fair is produced by the city’s Latino Institute. At the Fair families can obtain information on after-school programming, domestic violence, education, finance and immigration, nutrition, water safety and finance, and other valuable community resources. A panel discussion about challenges affecting the Latino community will cap off the event. For additional information call the Latino Institute at 602-261-8055.

Saturday, August 2, 2008. Maricopa County Department of Public Health has partnered with 5 Valley cities to offer back to school immunizations from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Bring all your child's immunization records to one of the following locations:

  • Chandler High School, 350 N. Arizona Avenue (Arizona Ave and Chandler Blvd)
  • Mesa Immunization Clinic, 423 N Country Club Drive (Country Club and University)
  • Independence High School, 6602 N 75th Avenue (75th Ave and Glendale)
  • Sunrise Mountain High School, 21200 N 83rd Avenue (83rd Ave and Deer Valley)
  • Roosevelt Immunization Clinic, 1645 E Roosevelt (16th St and Roosevelt)
  • Central High School, 4525 North Central, (Central and Campbell)
For more information on this program call 602-506-6767 (bilingual).
