When 2009 comes to a close dog racing in Phoenix will be a thing of the past, as Phoenix Greyhound Park has announced that they will close. The reason cited was "challenging economy and increased competition."

What does that mean for the future of horse racing in the Valley of the Sun? It isn't certain, but Turf Paradise in north Phoenix has made no such announcement. As a matter of fact, they made some renovations to Turf Paradise during the summer for both horses/owners and spectators. They are also hoping that they will be allowed to include some casino gambling features at the racetrack to allow them to more efficiently compete with the local casinos for those precious discretionary entertainment dollars.

Going to the races may seem like an activity more suited to old folks, and on the day last season that I visited there were plenty of gray hairs there. But I also thought it was fun and a nice change from watching a movie or going to a baseball game, and it would make a unique place for a party or group outing. I did do some small wagering while I was there. In the very first race how could I not bet on Can't Catch Judy? Well, most of the horses couldn't catch her, but a few did. I lost that 2 bucks, but the rest of the day went better -- I came out $5 ahead. A windfall!

Here are some specifics about Turf Paradise, photos old and new and some tips about visiting Turf Paradise.

I’m a big fan of greyhound racing and I’m sad to see Phoenix Greyhound Park close. But it’s been happening to alot of dog racing tracks. Not alot of people are interested in the sport anymore. Certainly very few young people

The State of Arizona should give them slot machines so they can stay open.

They also have one of the great announcers in the business working there, Ansel Styles.

It’s a shame.
