Five Free Things To Do In and Around Phoenix - October 2009

This week you can learn how to water your landscape, watch a baseball movie, test drive a new Camaro, tour an historic home, and get into the Arizona State fair free with donations for homeless veterans.

What: Landscape Watering 101
When: Thursday, October 15, 2009 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: Peoria City Hall, Pine Room
Peoria's Water Conservation Division is offering a free class on landscape watering. For more information or to pre-register, call 623-773-7286.

What: Major League Movie Night
When: Friday, October 16, 2009 at dusk
Where: Tempe Diablo Stadium
Tempe Parks and Recreation hosts Major League Movie Night at the Angels' spring training home. The cult favorite, The Sandlot (PG), will be shown on a large, inflatable screen in the outfield. Families are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating on the field. Admission is free, and stadium concession stands will be open throughout the movie. Attendees can bring food from home but no food from outside restaurants is allowed. Bottled water and soft-side coolers are also permitted, but please no other beverages or glass containers. Tempe Recycling will give away reusable bags at Major League Movie Night to people who bring old athletic shoes to be recycled in the Nike Reuse-a-Shoe program. Any brand of athletic shoes with no cleats, spikes or high heels will be accepted.

What: Test Drive the New GM
When: Saturday, October 17, 2009 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Desert Ridge Marketplace, Phoenix
General Motors Company invites Phoenix area residents to meet the 2010 starting line-up of GM cars and trucks. Attendees will have the opportunity to hop in the driver's seat of 2010 models including the 2010 Chevy Camaro, re-designed Buick LaCrosse and 32-mpg Chevy Equinox. Attendees will be able to test out the new wheels on a specially-design agility course behind AMC Theatres. Must be 21 years or older with a valid drivers license. Registration located at District South's entrance.

What: Discover the McCullough Price House
When: Saturdays, October 17, November 7 & 21, 2009 at 10 a.m.
Where: 300 S. Chandler Village Drive, southwest of Chandler Fashion Center
In 1938, famous Phoenix architects designed an elaborate vacation home in Chandler. Discover the architecture and history of this house with Chandler Museum staff during free, bimonthly tours on select Saturdays that last approximately 30 minutes. Call the Chandler Museum at 480-782-2717 with questions.

What: Arizona State Fair We Care Wednesdays
When: Wednesday, October 21, 2009 from noon to 6 p.m.
Where: Arizona State Fairgrounds
Free admission with a donation of one of the following per person: new pair of adult-sized socks, bottle of water, new adult-sized hats, new white adult-sized t-shirts, new adult-sized underwear. Donation benefit homeless veterans through Arizona Stand Down, the State's largest outreach event for homeless veterans.
