7 Free Things To Do In and Around Phoenix - September / October 2010

This week you can attend an interlude, catch a ball, see really short films, climb on a fire truck, meet a monarch, make a car and design a zombie.

What: ASU-MIM Wednesday Morning Interludes
When: Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at 10:30 a.m.
Where: MIM Music Theatre, Phoenix
The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) and Arizona State University's School of Music have teamed up to offer an ongoing music series showcasing the prodigious talents of ASU faculty members and touring musicians. Museum admission not required; theater seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis. At this session: John Ericson, Horns in the Nineteenth Century.

What: Baseball, Dogs, and Robots: The Science of Catching Balls
When: Friday, October 1, 2010 from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Where: Arizona Science Center
In conjunction with First Friday, Adults Night Out Arizona Science Center invites adults to enjoy the Center's 300 hands-on exhibits and engage your intellect in a thought provoking presentation. Explore research using head-cams and high-tech motion-capture cameras allows perception scientists to verify the manner in which pursuers couple themselves to their target. Findings with humans, dogs and autonomous robots confirm that fielders solve this seemingly complex problem with just a few remarkably simple control rules. There's a charge for IMAX or planetarium.

What: Teen Independent Film Festival
When: Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 7 p.m.
Where: Chandler Center for the Arts
The festival encourages Chandler teens to pursue their artistic goals by showcasing short films (under five minutes) they have written, directed and produced. Awards will be presented in a number of categories including Best Overall Film. The public is invited to attend and support the creativity and talent of local youth.

What: Fire Station Open House
When: Saturday, October 2, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Fire Station 171, 101 S. 5th Street (Old Town Avondale, South of Western Ave.)
To mark Fire Prevention Awareness Month, Avondale firefighters welcome the community into their "house". Learn valuable information that can keep you and your family safe from fire danger while enjoying free food and fun for the entire family. Fire engines and equipment will be on display to engage children in discussions on the importance of fire prevention.

What: Butterfly Bash
When: Saturday, October 2, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Environmental Education Center, Chandler
Monarch butterflies pass through Veterans Oasis Park during their fall migration. This event celebrates Monarchs and other beautiful butterflies through games, crafts, guided walks, and presentations.

What: Cars and Guitars Part Two
When: Saturday, October 2, 2010 from 9 a.m. to noon
Where: Tempe Community Complex, Rural Road and Southern Avenue
Families can enjoy a unique opportunity to demonstrate their creativity and appreciate vintage and handmade guitars. Participants may create one-of-a-kind car and guitar themed masterpieces. In addition to the car and guitar crafts, participants will also be able to enjoy musical entertainment and learn basic guitar chords. The city of Tempe's mobile educational recycling trailer, ERIC, will also be at the event, allowing participants to create items with recyclable materials. The event is an extension of the Tempe Center for the Arts exhibit. Scottsdale-based Fender Musical Instruments-themed guitars, cars and memorabilia are on display through Oct. 16 in the Gallery at Tempe Center for the Arts.

What: Teen Costume Design
When: Monday, October 4, 2010 at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Velma Teague Branch Library, 7010 N. 58th Ave., Glendale
Get ready for trick-or-treat season! Whether you're planning to be a zombie or a vampire, you'll receive fabulous and affordable ideas for putting together a one-of-a-kind costume during this free event for teens 12-18 years of age. This workshop will be presented by a professional costume designer for television, theater, and film. Register online or call 623-930-3431, then press "7" at the prompt and choose Velma Teague Library.
