Arizona Election 2010 - Arizona Corporation Commissioner

By October 8, 2010

Follow me on:

In November 2010 registered voters in Arizona will be voting for several ballot propositions. We will also decide which candidates will be elected to various important Arizona state positions. One of those positions is the Arizona Corporation Commissioner. Two seats will be filled at this election.

UPDATE November 4, 2010: Brenda Burns and Gary Pierce won.

In Arizona the Corporation Commissioners have the ultimate responsibility for final decisions on granting or denying rate adjustments, enforcing safety and public service requirements, and approving securities matters. Commissioners each serve a four-year term with the possibility of reelection to one additional four-year term. Terms are staggered, so that all five Commissioner seats are not decided at the same time. Arizona is one of only 13 states with elected Commissioners.

The candidates listed here represent a political party. A full listing, including any write-ins, can be found at the Arizona Secretary of State Elections website. Keep reading to see excerpts of platform points quoted from each candidates' respective website.

Candidate: David Bradley
City: Tucson
Party: Democratic
Official website: www.bradleyforarizona.com
A Few Platform Points:

  • "...the Commission should provide the insight and leadership to be both a resource and an incubator for research into alternative energy resources of every kind. The Commission should be actively recruiting new corporations to come to Arizona to make it the alternative energy capital of the world."
  • "The Corporation Commission is about the future but is also about providing jobs in the present particularly in the solar energy field where Arizona must be a leader."

Candidate: Jorge Luis Garcia
City: Tucson
Party: Democratic
Official website: www.votegarcia.org
A Few Platform Points:

  • "A Democratic majority on the Corporation Commission is vital for keeping electricity rates down and expanding clean energy in Arizona."
  • "...I will fight to keep future utility rate increases modest, to establish a new round of renewable energy standards, to make Arizona a leader in sustainable energy policies and renewable energy standards."

Candidate: Theodore Gomez
City: Tempe
Party: Green
I was unable to find an official website for this candidate.

Candidate: Rick Fowlkes
City: Phoenix
Party: Libertarian
Official website: www.rfowlkes.com
A Few Platform Points:

  • "Rick loves renewable and solar energy, but he doesn't think this should be used as an excuse to raise your electric rates. He is opposed to the Renewable Energy Tariff."
  • "Rick wants to follow through on legislation that gives the ACC the authority to end the monopoly system in the electric power industry in this state. He wants to give every customer two or three or more choices for their electric service provider. He believes competition is the best way to hold down electric rates."

Candidate: Brenda Burns
City: Scottsdale
Party: Republican
Official website: www.brendaburns2010.com
A Few Platform Points:

  • "It has become clear to me that the rates set by the ACC and the policies that drive those rates will have a significant impact on the economic future of all Arizonans. I have a strong record of protecting taxpayers while in the state legislature and I would look forward to continuing that role as a protector of the ratepayer and consumer."
  • "Currently there are critical issues facing our nation, state and local communities, many of which can directly affect the availability, affordability, efficiency and reliability of providing energy to Arizona consumers. As a Commissioner on the ACC, I would welcome the opportunity to address those and other ACC-related issues with a common sense approach for current and future generations."

Candidate: Gary Pierce
City: Mesa
Party: Republican
Official website: www.garypierceforarizona.com
A Few Platform Points:

  • "I am committed to keeping utilities affordable and to stamping out fraud and corruption. My experience, knowledge, and expertise in public policy will result in real solutions."
  • "As a Commissioner, he has worked to strengthen our power grid through increased transmission corridors. He has helped water customers by providing financial solutions for water companies to remove arsenic without harming customer pocketbooks."
