Wesley Bolin Plaza Memorial Park at the Arizona State Capitol will be the location of a new memorial to be erected in Phoenix, Arizona honoring the 1,902 men and women of Arizona that sacrificed their lives in WWII. Two gun barrels -- a 14-Inch gun barrel off the USS Arizona and a 16-Inch gun barrel off the USS Missouri -- will flank Mediterranean Blue steel pylons bearing dogtag-style placards with the names of the fallen soldiers on them. The color was chosen to match that of the exterior of the USS Arizona. The nine pieces of the structure, representing the 9 minutes of the sinking of the USS Arizona, will be arranged in a design to give the feeling of the vessel's silhouette. You can see the plans and renderings of the memorial on the first floor of the Arizona Capitol Museum.
The total cost for transporting the guns from the East Coast to Arizona by rail and the special permits lifting equipment and logistics involved in establishing the memorial are estimated to be about $500,000. Much of that has already been collected, but more donations are being requested. A representative from the State of Arizona Special Projects Department is available to speak to groups, organizations, and schools that may be interested in hearing about this efforts and why this memorial to all those who served in World War II and the war effort, both military and civilian alike, is important to Arizonans. You may call 602-926-3827 to inquire.
