Today is the day that we set aside to recognize how we impact the Earth, promote awareness of environmental issues and, hopefully, engage people into creating positive change for our planet. There were Earth Day events, festivals, and activities all over the metro Phoenix area this past week, encouraging people of all ages to volunteer, recycle, plant, and learn.
This week I had an opportunity to learn more about recycling. Sure, I had already written articles about how to recycle, so I presume that I know more about recycling than the average Phoenix resident. A few years ago I lived in an area where curbside recycling wasn't an option, so I learned how to sort certain items, like newspapers, phone books, cans and plastic containers. We set up small bins in the garage and when they were full, we drove them down to a nonprofit organization that collected items to convert into cash for their operations. A double win! Now, I have curbside recycling -- I donate some cash to that organization every year now to make up for their loss on recycling revenue! -- but I still want to learn more.
I spent some time at the United Fibers facility in the East Valley. I was quite impressed with that operation. I learned that I still have a lot to learn about recycling, and that we still have a long way to go to get it right. Take a tour with me. Find out what United Fibers does, how you fit in, and how you can even be paid for your recyclable materials.
