16 Free Things To Do in May - Phoenix, Tempe, Winkleman, Mesa, Casa Grande, Scottsdale, Surprise, Chandler

By May 14, 2012

Follow me on:

This week you can play golf if you're a kid, picture Ravel, see an old western, watch a strong woman, get fit, go to a birthday party, see a treasure hunter movie, go to another birthday party, dedicate a building, make something cute, go to a community fair, do it by hand, party at a museum, see a family film, walk to remember and see history come alive.

This column includes activities and programs in the Greater Phoenix area that have free admission. If you are looking for fundraisers, seminars, workshops, and other community programs that have an admission charge, or where donations are expected, I have a separate column for those. I call them "Phoenix Area Programs, Fundraisers & Events" and you can find those listings in my blog. They tend to cover a wider range of dates than a week, because advance registration is often required. For a long list of programs and festivals that are annual events in Greater Phoenix check the calendar.

The public is invited to a free living history performance celebrating Arizona's centennial. Weber's first person presentation will show Powell writing a letter to his wife, Emma, the night before embarking on his journey of exploration into the "Great Unknown." It is an insightful and entertaining glimpse into Powell's state of mind as he prepared to face the perils and the mysteries of the Grand Canyon. The performance is ideal for young students, teenagers and adults who are interested in learning about Arizona's pre-statehood history. A question and answer session with Weber, as Powell, will follow the presentation. This History Alive! event is made possible by the Arizona Humanities Council.
