In 2001 Arizona led the nation in the number of auto thefts for the year. Since that time, targeted efforts in our state have led to significant reductions in the number of cars stolen, and an improvement in almost every year since then in the number of vehicle thefts reported. The Greater Phoenix area, with the largest population in our state, has also made major inroads into reducing car and truck thefts. Still, auto theft is one of the most common crimes in the U.S.
