Arizona Election 2012: Maricopa County Sheriff

By September 30, 2012

Follow me on:

Update: Joe Arpaio won.
In November 2012 registered voters in Arizona will be voting for several ballot propositions including a sales tax, open elections and the process for selection of judges. We will also decide which candidates will be elected to various important Arizona state positions. One of those positions is Maricopa County Sheriff.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office provides basic patrol, investigative and detention services to contract towns & cities and to the unincorporated communities within the county.

The Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer of the County. The duties and responsibilities of the Maricopa County Sheriff include managing the county jail system with up to 10,000 inmates, lake patrols, providing services to the recreational areas in the county, providing law enforcement groups with Search and Rescue and other air support, maintaining a canine unit and managing a posse of volunteer deputies which is said to be the nation's largest volunteer posse.

The candidates listed here represent a political party. A full listing of Maricopa County candidates for all positions being elected at this time can be found at the Maricopa County Recorder website.

Not sure who will get your vote? Here are excerpts of platform points quoted from each candidates' respective website.

Candidate: Paul Penzone
Party: Democratic
Official website: www.penzone2012.com
A Few Platform Points:

  • "Make catching fugitives a top priority by fully staffing a fugitive apprehension unit to combat the increasing rate of fugitives right here at home. Prioritizing the apprehension of those who have been accused or convicted of crimes not only removes this element from our neighborhoods but it sends a message to criminals that we will find them and force them to answer to the judicial system."
  • "Streamline internal processes and focus resources directly in neighborhoods on preventing crime and catching violent criminals. Financial mismanagement has taken deputies off the street and reduced the department's ability to follow through on investigations and serving warrants. We must focus resources on making Maricopa County safer."
  • "Allowing 400 reports of sexual abuse against women and children to go uninvestigated is absolutely inexcusable. Criminal reports must be investigated to protect residents and take real criminals off the streets. Also inexcusable is allowing nearly 40,000 felony warrants to go un-served. This negligence is allowing criminals to walk free. It is the job of the Sheriff's Office to make sure felony warrants are served to keep our county safe."

Candidate: Mike Stauffer
Party: Independent
Official website: www.votestauffer.com
A Few Platform Points:
  • "As sheriff, I am bound to enforce the laws enacted by the state legislature as well as to follow the court decisions affecting these laws. The reality is that the group of laws known collectively as SB 1070 have been in effect and enforced for years by Arizona police departments. "
  • "I have determined that the 'tent city' facility does not adhere to the best practices and professional standards of the American criminal justice system. The inhumane treatment of inmates and the lack of rehabilitative services at this facility should be a cause of concern for all citizens. Under my direction, the 'tent city' facility in its present form will cease to exist. As Sheriff I will replace this facility with a self-sufficient 'Agricultural & Job Skills Center' for first time and low risk inmates to learn skills, attend rehabilitation programs and provide food and services to the rest of the county jail system."
  • "I will form a Warrant Service Unit that will focus on serving the thousands of outstanding arrest warrants currently on the back burner."
