In this issue: family skate for a cause, dive-in movie, fairy tales at the theatre, health expo, community concert, optical art, Cuban musicians, behind the scenes, rec center fun, food tour, corn hole tournament, a play for children and a museum fundraiser brunch.

This column includes announcements of seminars, workshops, community events, fundraisers and other programs for which there is an admission charge, a donation expected or you are otherwise expected to spend money, such as shopping events. Advance registration is required at some these events, so you might see them listed here weeks before they are scheduled to occur.

What: Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Family Fun Skate
When: Friday, October 12, 2012 from noon to 8 p.m.
Where: 1101 W. Ray Rd., Chandler
$7 Admission includes regular skates rental, $1 extra for blades & speed skates. $1 of the admission proceeds goes to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to help find cures and better treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma.

What: Dive-In Movie Night
When: Friday, October 12, 2012 at 6 p.m.
Where: Mesquite Groves Aquatic Center, Chandler
Bring the family and an inner tube and enjoy a great movie poolside. See Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, rated G. The water is heated. Children $1, Adults $2.25, Seniors $1.25

What: Desert Stages Theatre presents Into the Woods
When: Fri., Oct. 12 through Sun., Nov. 4, 2012
Where: 4720 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale
The Baker and his wife struggle to break the curse of their childlessness and travel Into the Woods as instructed by the deal-making witch. Along the way they bump into classic fairytale characters, Cinderella, Jack, the giant, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, princes and a wolf. As the beloved characters face their fears in the woods, they learn the importance of community and family, and unite in an ultimate battle of good vs. evil. Tickets online or by phone to 480.483.1664, and at the theatre box office. Tickets are $25 for adults, $22 for seniors and students.

What: Healthy Kids Expo
When: Saturday, October 13, 2012 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Superstition Springs Center, jcpenney Court, US 60 & Power Road, Mesa
Health, education and safety tips for kids, plus children's entertainment: Dance Attack Performance at 11 a.m.; Persephone Music & Fitness Fun at noon; Kids Zumba with Beatriz at 1 p.m.; Hip Hop with Weezy at 2 p.m.; Free Balloon Art & Face Painting from 11 am-3 pm. Please bring a new toy donation to benefit Emily's Toys-4-Joy.

What: Our House Tempe Community Concert
When: Saturday, October 13, 2012 from noon to 4:30 p.m.
Where: Tempe Community Complex, Rural Road and Southern Avenue
In an effort to bring attention to the plight of local residents experiencing homelessness and to provide them relief, the Ramsey Social Justice Foundation, in partnership with the City of Tempe, will host the event. This outdoor concert will feature performances from Teneia Sanders, AJ Odneal, Traveler, Chuck Hall and Walt Richardson, Family and Friends. Community members and families are invited to bring picnic lunches and blankets and enjoy an afternoon of free music. Attendees are encouraged to bring care items for individuals at risk for or experiencing homelessness. Requested items include unopened packages of socks, underwear and T-shirts, sunscreen, razors, deodorant and bottled water.

What: PhxArt Kids Day - Op Art
When: Sunday, October 14, 2012 from noon to 3 p.m.
Where: Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix
Designed for children aged 5-12, PhxArt Kids Day explored Optical Art in the PhxArt Kids Gallery, mastering the illusion of this modern art movement by creating their own artwork using simple lines and color palettes. The event is included in regular Museum admission.

What: Chamber Music: The Cubans are Coming
When: Monday, October 15, 2012 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Tempe Center for the Arts
The Orquesta de Camara Concierto Sur chamber octet from Cienfuegos, Cuba performs in a rare cultural exchange between the USA and Cuba. This renowned Latin American chamber ensemble will be in the United States as part of a Northwest residency exchange and has agreed to make a final stop at the Tempe Center for the Arts. Performing with the Orquesta de Camara Concierto Sur are members of the Northwest Sinfonietta of Tacoma, WA.

What: Behind the Scenes Tour at Pueblo Grande Museum
When: Wednesday, October 17, 2012 from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Where: Pueblo Grande Museum, Phoenix
An opportunity to learn about the artifacts that are not on display at the museum and to see how museums care for their collections. Arrive early because space is limited on the tour. General admission prices apply.

What: Tumbleweed Recreation Center Family Nights
When: Wednesday, October 17, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: Tumbleweed Recreation Center , Chandler
Arts and crafts, performances and more presented by Chandler Recreation Division. Ages 1 to 12: $2 for Residents, $3 for Non-Residents; Ages 13 to 17: $3 for Residents, $5 for Non-Residents.

What: Whisk Bliss Food Tour 2012
When: Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 7 p.m.
Where: La Quinta Inn and Suites - Mesa West, 902 W. Grove Ave., Mesa
Live cooking demonstration. Free samples, door prizes and raffles. You're invited to a night of easy-to-prepare, tasty meals made with the time-tested Shirley J food products. What: Corn Hole Tournament
When: Saturday, October 20, 2012
Where: 6th Street Plaza, 517 E. Monroe Ave., Buckeye
Hosted by The Town of Buckeye Community Services Department. Check-in begins at 11:30 with tournament starting at noon. Cost is $20 per team of two with a chance to take home a first place prize of $150 in cash. Participants must be 13 years or older and at least one member of the team must be 18 years or older. Pick up an application at the Town of Buckeye Community Center, Library, Recreation Center or Town or go online to register.

What: The Giver
When: October 21 through November 11, 2012
Where: Tempe Center for the Arts
Taking on one of its most challenging and high-concept projects to date, Childsplay brings a stage adaptation of Lois Lowry's Newberry award-winning novel, "The Giver." Jonas lives in a "perfect world" - a world without war, fear or pain. All of the world's problems have been eliminated - including making choices or feeling emotion. But when Jonas turns 12, he is selected to receive special training from The Giver. Soon a new world opens up to him - exposing harsh truths about his society. In this moving adaptation, audiences will discover what it means to grow up and take charge of their own future. Performances are on Saturdays at 1 pm and 4 pm and Sundays at 1 pm at the Tempe Center for the Arts, 700 W. Rio Salado Parkway. Tickets start at $12. All tickets for the Oct. 21st 1 pm Storybook Preview Performance are $12 and come with a complimentary book for all families that attend.

What: A Celebrity Affair 2012, featuring American Idol Scott MacIntyre
When: October 24, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix
Raising funds to benefit Phoenix Art Museum, A Celebrity Affair is a silent auction and brunch, which features performances by Scott MacIntyre, American Idol contestant, and the first blind contestant to become a finalist on the long-running television competition. Tickets are $65, with a special student admission price of $35, and include both brunch and admission to the Museum. For more information or to reserve your tickets, call (602) 307-2050.
