2 Free Things To Do In and Around Phoenix - December 2012

By December 24, 2012

Follow me on:

This week you can recycle and take a walk.

This column includes activities and programs in the Greater Phoenix area that have free admission. If you are looking for fundraisers, seminars, workshops, and other community programs that have an admission charge, or where donations are expected, I have a separate column for those. I call them "Phoenix Area Programs, Fundraisers & Events" and you can find those listings in my blog. They tend to cover a wider range of dates than a week, because advance registration is often required. For a long list of programs and festivals that are annual events in Greater Phoenix check the calendar.

It is Christmas Eve, and most activities for the next week are holiday-related. Many of them are free to attend; you can find those in the Big Holiday Festival List here.

What: I Recycle Phoenix Festival
When: Friday, December 28, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Christown Spectrum Mall, located at 19th Avenue and Bethany Home Road, behind Walmart
The Public Works Department will partner with Keep Phoenix Beautiful, KTVK-3TV and dozens of other local organizations to offer one convenient location for recycling a variety of items, including electronics, telephone books, Christmas trees, holiday decorations, regular recyclables, clothing, toys and much more. Participants also can have their old computer hard drives and personal documents shredded and recycled. No chemicals, paint or other hazardous waste. For more information, call 602-262-4820.

What: Family Nature Walk
When: Sunday, December 30, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Where: Environmental Education Center at Veterans Oasis Park, Chandler
The habitats at Veterans Oasis Park are a haven for a variety of wildlife, especially birds and insects. Join a naturalist for a guided walk that explores the plants and animals of the park's desert and wetland habitats. Bring binoculars if you have them and water and wear good walking shoes and a hat. The walks are not fast-paced and the terrain is easy. Participants should meet at the Red-tailed Hawk ramada.

More Freebies

If you've arrived at this page and find that the event dates have past, check my recent blog entries for more Free Things -- I write about free things to do in Greater Phoenix several times per month. Also, check that same blog list for another column on upcoming fundraisers, walks, runs, seminars, workshops and programs that might interest you.

If you know about a free event that's open to the public that you'd like me to consider for this weekly column, complete and submit this form at least 8 days prior to the event and I'll consider it.

All dates, times, prices and offerings are subject to change without notice.
