Get a Marriage License Online?

Saturday March 22, 2008
It's officially Spring, and love is in the air. Here's an email I received about romance and marriage.
My fiancee and I may be coming to AZ mid April and have read information regarding obtaining a marriage license and becoming one in AZ we will be visiting Sedona and would love to get married amongst the red rocks .....least that's my idea .... can we do marriage licenses over the internet ....?? See that cant be done by mail....can we have an application emailed to me and I am actually going to surprise her and have this all taken care of ... will be doing a romantic location with romantic proposal with marriage the following day. I am 61 and she is 56.......let me know
That's so nice! Well, I have good news. "Sedona" and "romance" just go together. But about that marriage license...here's my answer. No, you can’t apply for a marriage license online, and they won’t mail you an application. Both people have to physically appear in order to receive a license. It usually doesn’t take too long, and you can be married the same day or the next day.

Sedona is a beautiful place to become engaged or to get married or just to spend a romantic time in the midst of the red rocks! It is actually in Yavapai County, so the nearest Superior Court to that location that would issue a marriage license would be Cottonwood. If you want to surprise her, therefore, you’ll just have to find another way to do that.

I don’t know if the two of you are the outdoorsy types, but I always recommend the Pink Jeep Tour, specifically the Broken Arrow tour, for people who like adventure and don’t mind a rough, exciting ride. There’s a point during that tour where they let everyone out on a mesa to enjoy the surrounding beauty. Here’s a picture. Maybe you could arrange with the tour group in advance that you’d propose at that point? Have a bouquet of flowers waiting up there for her? Bring a camera and have the guide be prepared to capture your one-knee moment? Then the next day, you could have a lovely outdoor breakfast at L’Auberge and then drive into Cottonwood for the license and ceremony.

Pink Jeep rides are very popular. You’ll want to reserve one now for an April visit. I’m sure they have had special surprises there before, so maybe they can assist with the details. If you do it, send me a picture after you get back and I’ll feature it on About.com! In any case, you are very sweet to be thinking about how to make this very special for her.
