Phoenix Restaurant Inspections - The Neat and the Nasty

Saturday April 12, 2008
I don't know how all the restaurants around town stay in business, but there are thousands of them. Because my lists of the

establishments with the best inspections for the month have started to get rather long, I've made some adjustments. I already exclude organization or club sites (like Elks or VFW clubs), corporate or school dining rooms, church facilities, shelters or other locations where people generally can't just pop in and order a meal. Now, I'll also be excluding grocery stores, membership clubs like Costco, golf courses and hotel listings where the specific restaurant within that hotel is not named. If you have a particular interest in one of those, you can, of course, still get the inspection results from the county. You just won't see them on my list. Most people perusing these lists every month are really looking for standalone-type restaurants anyway.

On the naughty list for March we have the typical array of Mexican and Chinese places. A couple of well-known names in central Phoenix also popped up this month with 9 or more major violations. That's not good.

Have had numerous occasions to visit the Wagon Yard Resturant and Saloon located at 2625 E. Bell Rd. in Phoenix and have noticed many many health violations. The cooks never wear gloves, play with their hair, and nite cook observed picking his nose. Cockroaches all over. The bar area rarely cleaned, bugs observed running over the bar. Sewer drain umnder the bar sink always backs up onto floor, owner cleans it with hand rotor rooter while people are eating at the bar. Floors never washed in both bar and eating areas under booths and tables. Have to use a scrapper to clean old grease caked on floor.
Both men’s and ladies rooms filthy. One of men’s urinal always plugged up closed off with duct tape but still being used and smells of old urine, soap and towel dispenser rarely filled.
Rear patio never washed or cleaned. Have been there and observed owner pouring whole bottles of bleach of tables to rid of ants while people are outside eating and drinking. Ash trays not cleaned, open trash barrels in eating area rarely dumped. Flies galore. Shed off eating area on patio full of junk, trash breading ground for mice, ants and cockroaches. This is all terrible especially during the warm weather.
To sum this all up, I no longer care to bring family and friends into this establishment due to the filth and uncleanliness. I have also been there when health inspectors have been in and seem to overlook many of these problems.

Gee, Ed. After reading this wholly disgusting and vile depiction, the thought occurs: why would you EVER even sit down in this place, let alone actually eat there even ONCE??? You “no longer care to bring family and friends into this establishment due to the filth and uncleanliness.” NO LONGER??? I’d say one peek inside and it’s bye bye, adios, so long, followed by a lovely phone call to the health department! :D

You are far more tolerant than I, Ed.

i was surprised to see your article about the ‘nasty’restaurants in phx,i didn’t know anyone was paying attention, it seems as if nasty is the norm for most places in az, particularly the mexican restaurants,az bd of health needs to enforce compliance with their regulations, customers need to call bd of health and report every instance of ‘nasty’,if enough people complain maybe the bd of health will stop looking the other way. don’t get me wrong i have eaten in many nice restaurants in az, (some were mex). i lived in ny all of my life and moved to yuma 3 yrs ago and i was/am shocked at whatpeople spending their $$ money
