I am contacted from time to time by people who are new to the valley, or are considering moving to the valley, who are concerned about scorpions. Having lived in Phoenix for more than twenty five years, and having rarely seen one that was not in captivity, I was surprised to find the level of concern and worry about the creatures. Believe it or not, some people don't want to avoid scorpions. They rather like the creepy things and collect scorpion paperweights, key chains, lollipops, and bookmarks. Some people actually collect the arachnids! But if you are like me, I'd rather stay out of their way.
