El Greco to Picasso

Important Art Exhibit Visits Phoenix Art Museum

By Judy Hedding, About.com

Phoenix Art Museum has unveiled the most important exhibition to come to Arizona, entitled Masterworks from El Greco to Picasso in The Phillips Collection. This extraordinary exhibition features the works of 32 of the world's most famous and beloved artists. Phoenix is the only city in the West to host this prestigious exhibition. Judging from the ticket sales, this exhibition could be one of the most popular in the Museum's history.

El Greco to Picasso, on view at Phoenix Art Museum through May 4, 2003, brings 53 spectacular paintings and sculpture to Arizona, including one of the world's most famous French Impressionist paintings, Luncheon of the Boating Party, by Pierre Auguste Renoir. This is only the second time this monumental work of art has traveled in 15 years. The all-star roster of artists in the exhibition includes van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, Matisse, Degas, El Greco, Cézanne, Rodin, Klee, Kandinsky, Chardin, Delacroix, Gauguin, Picasso, and more.

"We are proud to bring this extraordinary exhibition to Phoenix and the Southwest," said James Ballinger, director of Phoenix Art Museum. "These masterworks showcase the talents of some of history's most important European artists. And with this exhibition, the Museum is trying new ways to present various levels of information about the artists and their works. Whether you are interested in learning about the artists, the techniques and styles, or simply want to listen to music as you take in this wonderful art, there is something for everyone to enjoy."

The Museum Tour

Included with admission to the exhibition is the bilingual, random access audioguide that features, in addition to an adult track and a family and children's track, a musical soundtrack - a first for the Museum's audioguides. Additionally, the Museum will provide each visitor with a small "pocket guide" that includes information about each work of art, rather than presenting the information on the wall next to each work - another first. The pocket guide can be taken home and enjoyed long after visiting the exhibition. A special satellite store, Masterworks Market, will offer exhibition-related gifts and merchandise, including the fully illustrated exhibition catalog, Art Beyond Isms: Masterworks from El Greco to Picasso in The Phillips Collection, published by The Phillips Collection.

Phoenix Art Museum is the second of only five cities on this rare exhibition tour. El Greco to Picasso was at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, prior to Phoenix Art Museum and it subsequently will travel to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo; the Denver Art Museum; and the new Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville.
