In a large metropolitan area like Phoenix, you might expect that there is always something going on. There is! Phoenix, Peoria, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale and many other communities have recurring events of which they are proud.

These are many of the community events that you can count on year in and year out during the month of October. All dates, prices, and activities mentioned are subject to change without notice. Check the website or call to confirm information, since there may have been changes after I added the event to the calendar. The activities in this event calendar are appropriate for families unless otherwise indicated. If the event is free, I'll mention that, too.

• Phoenix Area Concerts and Shows - October
• 2nd Friday in Mesa
  Live music, entertainment, art walk, prizes. Each month has a theme. Family friendly. Free admission. On Main Steet between Center and Country Club in Downtown Mesa.

• Arab American Festival
  More than 40 singers, musicians and dancers from all over the Arab World. Activities include kids rides, fashion show, Hookah Lounge and an Arabic Food Court. Steele Indian School Park, Phoenix.

• Arizona Cardinals Football
  The Arizona Cardinals play professional football at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

• Arizona Dance Festival
  Showcase different dance artists, including emerging artists as well as professionals from all genres and styles of dance. Tempe Center for the Arts.
  In 2011: October 7, 8


• Arizona Fall League Baseball
  After the regular baseball season is over, there are six more weeks of baseball in October and November when each of the 30 Major League Baseball teams select 6 prospects to play in the AFL. At stadiums around the Valley.

• Arizona Humanities Festival
  Takes place during National Arts and Humanities Month at Phoenix Civic Space Park at 424 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix and the adjacent Downtown ASU campus. Include exhibitors, performances, storytelling, programs and activities. Free admission.

• Arizona State Fair
  Rides, food, competitions, concerts, exhibits -- two weeks of fun. Held at the Fairgrounds in Central Phoenix.
  In 2011: October 14 - November 6 (except Mondays and Tuesdays)


• Arizona Taco Festival
  Competitors will cook Tacos and related dishes. Vendors. Admission charge plus tickets charge for samples. Some proceeds from the event benefit Waste Not.

• ArtBridge Thursdays
  Artists, crafters and jewelers exhibit and sell items in a family-friendly, festive environment. SouthBridge, Downtown Scottsdale. Free admission.

• ASU Homecoming Parade
  ASU’s Homecoming Parade welcomes the entire Valley community to celebrate Sun Devil Spirit! Show your Devilish spirit in your best devil, gold, and ASU gear. University Drive, Tempe.

• Arizona's Ultimate Women's Expo
  Hundreds of exhibits of products and services including fashion, beauty, health, fitness, home, careers, financial planning, education. A full schedule of speakers on four stages, book signings, celebrity appearances, and cooking and design demonstrations, including design experts providing tips on preparing your home for the holidays. Phoenix Convention Center.

• Autumn Celebration
  A celebration of all things Irish and Celtic. Pipers, Irish step dancers, Irish music, craft sale and a hayride and kids games with prizes. Raffle with cash prizes. Food and a cash bar. Irish Cultural Center, Phoenix.

  Carnival; live entertainment; fine arts and crafts; a pumpkin patch, pony and barrel rides; inflatables and a eurobungee; hay rides, and a food court with beer and wine garden. Anthem Community Park.

  Activities and events to raise money to fight breast cancer.

• Cabela's Kids Kamp
  Free programs on topics related to hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities for ages 9-13 at Cabela's in Glendale.
  In 2011: Every Monday evening (except when store is closed for a holiday)


• Centerline Artwerks | First Saturdays
  Features live performing artists, local painters, sculptors, dancers and musicians. Just east of Murphy Park at 58th Avenue north of Glendale Avenue, event goers will have the opportunity to watch artists at work as well as tour the historic area. Free to attend.

• Chandler's Day of Play
  An event to promote heath, wellness, and fitness for kids of all ages. Free activities will get the kids playing and their minds active, while parents can explore the various booths on health, wellness, and fitness. Free admission. Tumbleweed Park.

• Charles Schwab Cup Championship Tournament
  The last event on the Champions Tour for pro golfers age 50 and over. A tournament winner be determined, and the Charles Schwab Cup Champion for the year will also be named. Scottsdale.
  In 2012: October 31 - November 4


• Community Cinema
  Free movie and post-show discussion, presented by City of Mesa Office of Diversity, City of Mesa Human Relations Advisory Board, Mesa Arts Center, ITVS Community Cinema and Eight Arizona PBS. Dobson Lecture Hall at Mesa Arts Center. Free.

• Crossroads of the West Gun Show
  Hundreds of tables to meet the needs of everyone, from the once a year hunter to the avid collector. University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale.
