In a large metropolitan area like Phoenix, you might expect that there is always something going on. You are correct! Phoenix, Peoria, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale and many other communities have recurring events of which they are proud.

These are many of the community events that you can count on year in and year out. All dates, prices, and activities mentioned are subject to change without notice. Check the web site or call to confirm information. The activities in this event calendar are appropriate for families unless otherwise indicated. If the event is free, I'll mention that, too.

• 4th Friday ArtWalk
  Photography, jewelry, crafts, paintings, sculptures and more. Live music. 6 p.m. 9 p.m. Mesa Riverview.

• Ahwa-Turkey Stomp / Car and Craft Show
  Vehicles of all different makes, models and years. A judged event with trophies being awarded to 14 classes. Craft booths, live entertainment. Food and spirits available. Held in conjunction with the Ahwa-Turkey Stomp to raise money, food and toys for various organizations. Fee to show your car or have a booth. Admission to attend is a frozen turkey, non-perishable food items or new unwrapped toys. Ahwatukee Community Swim & Tennis Center

• Apache Junction Art Festival of the Superstitions
  Juried fine-art show with live musical entertainment, theatrical performance groups and a Cultural Cuisine Court. Kid Zone. Central Arizona College.

• Arizona Antique Show
  primitives, ephemera, eclectic, glassware, pottery, collectibles, toys, advertising, military items, coins, early American linens, fine selections of vintage costume jewelry and fine estate jewelry. Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix.

• Arizona Cardinals Football
  The Arizona Cardinals play professional football in the Valley of the Sun.

• Arizona Classic Jazz Festival
  Jazz, and lots of it! Chandler.

• Arizona Fall League Baseball
  After the regular baseball season is over, there are six more weeks of baseball in October and November when each of the 30 Major League Baseball teams selects 6 prospects to play in the AFL. At stadiums around the Valley.

• Arizona Home and Building Expo
  At the Phoenix Convention Center. Home building, home improvements, interior design and home building products and services. Over 700 booths.

• Arizona International Auto Show
  Hundreds of the newest cars, trucks, minivans and sport utility vehicles. Entertainment and celebrity appearances. Phoenix Convention Center.
  In 2008: November 27 - 30

• ArtFest of Scottsdale
  Fine art, live music, international foods, and an interactive family area featuring hands-on art activities and creative challenges for children. Over 200 select contemporary artists and crafts people from across the nation will show and sell one-of-a-kind artwork. Scottsdale Civic Center Plaza. Free admission.

• Avondale's Entertainment Series
  Free concerts and shows will be held at Avondale Civic Center Amphitheater. Bring lawn chairs and blankets. Pack a picnic dinner (no glass containers or alcohol), or purchase a meal from a vendor.

• Bluegrass Festival
  Wickenburg. This three day event has featured the Four Corners championship contests for fiddle, flat pick guitar, banjo and mandolin.

• Breast Cancer Awareness Events
  Walks and runs to raise money to fight breast cancer.

• Cancer Treatment Centers of America Tennis Championships
  Part of the Outback Champions Series, a road tournament that pits past tennis greats against one another. Legends of tennis in a competitive, fan friendly, round-robin format with a champion crowned on the last day of the event. Surprise.

• Carefree Fine Arts and Wine Festival
  Arts, crafts, entertainment, wine. Over 160 artists will have displays. This is Arizona's largest wine tasting event, featuring wines from Arizona, California, Australia, Germany, Austria, France and Italy. Sponsored by Thunderbird Artists.

• Chandler ArtWalk
  Visit artisans set up along the streets in front of the unique shops and cafes of Historic Downtown Chandler. Free.
  In 2008: First Wednesday of the month

• Chiles and Chocolate Festival
  Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix. Chili and chocolate products from local vendors, unique Southwest gifts, cooking demonstrations, Spanish Flamenco dance and Latin jazz.
  In 2008: Postponed until 2009

• Climb Phoenix
  1000 climbers will ascend the stairwells of a downtown hi-rise. Participants will receive medals, water, and enjoy views of downtown Phoenix, and return to the ground level for refreshments, live music and exhibits/vendors. Benefits American Lung Association.

• Cowboy Artists of America Exhibit
  The Phoenix Art Museum hosts this event. Paintings, drawings and sculptures. Many never seen before.
  In 2008: October 19 - November 16

• Cruzzin’ Mesa Riverview
  Over 1,000 vehicles, from low-riders to classic Ford Model T’s. Live and roaming entertainment from a variety of bands and performers, as well as contests, giveaways, and more. Two types of Street Cruising will occur during the event; a one-way on-site cruise route will parade the participants past the spectators, and a two-way cruise route will take place on Main Street in downtown Mesa.
