For most people, Halloween is a time for fun and costumes and parties. Here are some safe alternatives to trick or treating for you and your family. They are presented here in date order.

Spooktacular Golf
Golfland, Mesa
Experience an 18-hole miniature golf course that has undergone a terrifying transformation! Opens at 11 a.m., closes midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, 10 p.m. all other nights. $6.50 per child; $7.75 per adult. On Thursdays and Sundays in October donate canned food items and receive $1 off for every can, up to two cans ($2 off), on admission.

The Great Arizona Puppet Theater presents "Little Bunny's Halloween." Not scary and meant to be enjoyed by little kids, ages preschool to Grade 3.

Theater Works presents Night of the Living Dead

Based on George Romero and John Russo’s original film, the classic horror movie comes to theatre! Forget about haunted houses this Halloween season; come see the zombies up close and personal. Prepare to be scared!

International Horror and Science Fiction Film Festival

Three days of horror packed fun and fiction. Meet some of Horror’s and Sci-Fi’s greatest icons, see some bloody good films, then party with the filmmakers and fans.

Fall Festival at Luv Shack Ranch
36029 N. 10th Street, Phoenix
Horsin’ around for the entire family. Face painting, Horse Kissing Booth, Bounce House, Horse Painting, Cake Walk, Hay Ride to the Pumpkin Patch (4:30 - 6:30), games and prizes. Luv Shack Ranch Horse Rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of abused, neglected and slaughter bound horses. $5 admission, under 12 free.
In 2009: Saturday, October 16 (haunted attraction only) from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; October 17 (haunted attraction and festival) from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Witches Night Out: A Halloween Costume Event
12 West Main, 12 West Main St., Mesa
Tarot Card Readers, Belly Dancers, Intuitives, Energy Healers, and other surprises await our guests. Music: Top Rock, Latin, Pop and Halloween Favorites. Prizes awarded for Best Witch Cackle, Ugliest Witch, Sexiest Witch, Most Creative Costume. Fundraiser for local charities. $40 per person. 21+ only.
In 2009: Saturday, October 17 from 7:30 p.m. to midnight.

Fright Night! Teen after Hours Party

Teens will take over the building during this spine-chilling evening of team competition, music, prizes and pizza. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Registration begins on Oct. 5. Free.
In 2009: Friday, October 23 at 6 p.m.

Night at the Museum
Arizona Museum of Natural History, 53 N. Macdonald in Mesa
Put on your costume for a showing of the original “Night at the Museum” movie. The movie starts at 6 p.m. with seating for 120 people on a first come-first serve basis. You can come to the museum dressed as Teddy Roosevelt, a mummy, a dinosaur, security guard or other characters from the movie, or you can come as yourself and enjoy the fun. Admission to the museum is free for members, non-members pay $7 for adults and $4 for everyone 18 and under.
In 2009: Friday, October 23 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Family Halloween Carnival

Children of all ages will enjoy this night of safe and friendly Halloween fun as they visit Frankenstein’s Fishing Hole, play Ghost Bingo, decorate pumpkins and more. The event will also have inflatable bounces and slides, a food and beverage court, vendor booths and entertainment stages. Admission $4; ages 3 and under free. Parking is free.

Ghost Tour and Historical Walk
Main and Macdonald in downtown Mesa
Visit historic sites and buildings in Mesa, exploring their histories and stories. Are these myths, rumors, legends? Does Mesa have tunnels? What floats down the stairs in the old jail? Come find out on this 2-hour docent-led tour of historic downtown Mesa. Pre-registration required. $10 for adults, $6 for children (ages 3-12).

Field of Screams
Goodyear Ballpark
Haunted Fun House, Giant Triple Slide, a Train Ride, a Haunted Maze, Pumpkin Patch, costume contests for ages 12 and under with prizes, take-home craft projects, food vendors. Free parking and admission. Small fee for rides, maze and pumpkin patch. Call 623-882-3120 for information.

Halloween games for young children, learn about composting at the live worm bin, see Halloween animals like cats, bats, owls, snakes, spiders and bugs. Enjoy all of your favorite Boo! traditions: pumpkin stomp and chomp for the zoo's animals; mascot parade – costumed characters from the community; pony parade; live entertainment.
