Randi Coy, Scottsdale Resident, on Reality TV

Randi Coy is Duped on My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancé

By , About.com Guide

Randi Coy of Scottsdale is the star of a new reality program on Fox: My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancé. The premise of the show is that Randi thought she could win half a million dollars if she convinced her family that she is marrying Steve Williams (not his real name), a rude and crude jerk. At the time of the filming, Randi Coy believed that he was vying for the other half of the prize. What she didn't know is that he and his friends are actors and their goal was to make her and her family's life miserable.

Under fire for participating in a reality TV show that her employers thought inappropriate, Randi Coy, 23, quit her job yesterday as a first-grade teacher at Pope John XXIII Catholic School Community in northeast Phoenix. She was on leave since Thanksgiving break when she began taping the show. When officials at Pope John XXIII Catholic School originally learned of Coy's reality TV role, they put her on unpaid leave and sent a letter home to all the parents letting them know that the show might not be appropriate for their children to watch.

There are six episodes of My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancé. Most reviewers believed after the first episode that this was about six too many. Randi Coy was blasted in many reviews for being the only one who couldn't tell this was a hoax from the beginning. Apparently, she has given new life to those old dumb blonde jokes.

According to Reuters News Service, "Meeting with TV critics last week, Randi said she didn't think what was done to her family was particularly cruel. She confessed, however, that she still harbored resentment about the joke played on her."

Almost 20 million viewers watched the first episode of the series, but many of these were carry-overs from American Idol, which aired immediately before it. The show was created by the same people who brought us "Joe Millionaire" and "Temptation Island."

Personal notes about Randi Coy

  • Enjoys traveling, going to movies, reading and crossword puzzles.
  • Describes herself as "fun yet a bit quirky."
  • Friends called her "Rands."
