In 2003 the Arizona Legislature approved the Arizona Farmer's Market Nutrition Program, also known by the acronym "AZ FMNP." The objective of Arizona Farmer's Market Nutrition Program is to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables eaten by women and children participating in the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and senior clients in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program. WIC participants from both the Arizona WIC Program and the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, Inc. WIC program will receive booklets of checks. These checks will enable those people to go to an approved farmers market in Arizona and buy $20 of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables.

This is clearly a win-win situation in our communities. It helps people who need the nutritional support, it helps local growers when people shop with them at farmers markets, it helps keep the money in the communities where the people live and work, and it helps the farmers markets themselves. Maybe I should call that a win-win-win-win situation!
