An arroyo is a dry desert gully, usually a small, narrow canyon with steep walls and flat with a gravel strewn floor. An alluvial fan is fan-shaped pile of sediment that forms at the base of narrow canyons at the foot of a mountain range. A bajada is a flat area where alluvial fans meet. (An empanada is a Latin American pastry.)
