Blanco Tacos + Tequila - The Mood

The vibe at this Fox Restaurant Concepts creation is similar to other restaurants they have opened in town. It's young and chic, but casual and not stuffy. Come as you are for a business lunch, easy-going date, or bring the out-of-towners who want Mexican food but not the mariachis.

Blanco Tacos + Tequila - The Damages

Two of us ordered a cheese crisp to share, a small bowl of soup, a small order of guacamole, an order of tacos, an entree and a dessert. The total came to about $27 each, excluding beverages, tax and gratuity.

My Review of Blanco Tacos + Tequila

Blanco Tacos + Tequilas rubbed me the right way. I have my favorite burrito places and neighborhood joints, but when I want to take someone out to a nice place for Sonoran Mexican food the words "nice" and "Mexican" always seem like an oxymoron. Now, I think I have the place.

I'm not all that fond of the cavernous dining room style of the place and the one large sign declaring "Mexican Plates" seemed out of place and distracting to me. What's important, though, is that I enjoyed the food, found it reasonably priced, and I am looking forward to returning to try more menu items.

We started with a Cheese Crisp ($11) -- half Chorizo, Green Chile and Tomato and half Braised Short Rib & Avocado. I can understand why the Short Rib is their most-often-requested, even though I am usually a chorizo (spicy sausage) lover. Cheese crisps here are more like a very thin crust pizza with ample toppings; I would have liked more cheese on mine. The Chicken & White Corn Tortilla Soup  ($3.60) was ample, even though we ordered only half a portion. Delicious! Likewise, we asked for a small order of Guacamole Blanco Style ($5) which lived up to its reputation. Thank you for making it fresh (they say about every half hour) and serving it at room temperature.

Shrimp Fajitas at Blanco Tacos + Tequila © Judy Hedding

The Shrimp Fajitas ($18) were excellent, but there's a slow burn there so be careful if you don't like it spicy. I tried a Fish Taco/Shrimp Taco plate ($13) and I give it a thumbs up. The Flan ($5) was a scrumptious end to a lovely meal.

The food at Blanco Tacos + Tequilas is not prepared nor is it presented as it might be at your typical ***iberto's Mexican Food stand. Your fajitas won't come with little servings of jack cheese, lettuce and sour cream. Blanco Tacos + Tequilas used high quality cheeses including cotija cheese, as you would find in Mexico. No refried beans here. As for the rice, it's not that red, greasy stuff; with chiles and corn, this is the first time I have ever enjoyed rice with Mexican food!

I was impressed with the flexibility of the menu and the staff. Want a half order of something? Want to mix tacos? Want half pinto beans and half black beans? They can do that.

Blanco Tacos + Tequilas is open for lunch and dinner seven days per week. Check the web site for special promotions and events.
