Diane Rutherford
Recipient of the YWCA's
2001 Tribute to Women Award
Dorothy Willey Award

Ten outstanding women in Maricopa County were named honorees in the YWCA’s Tribute to Women 2001 Awards.  The annual awards recognize women whose lives and accomplishments reflect the YWCA’s mission to empower women and eliminate racism.

The recipient of the Dorothy Willey Award is Diane Rutherford. Diane Rutherford exemplifies the spirit of the Dorothy Willey Award which recognizes an outstanding YWCA member for her commitment and volunteerism. Diane currently serves as Community Relations Manager for The Arizona Republic’s East Valley Bureau, although she began her career as a high school English teacher and later joined Arizona State University’s Communications Department as a faculty associate. But Diane’s background in public service and volunteerism is even more impressive. In 1992, Diane joined the YWCA Board of Directors and served in various capacities, including President, Secretary, and on the Nominating and Executive Search committees. In addition, Diane also served for seven years on the YWCA’s Tribute to Women committee. When she first joined, the organization faced many challenges, but with Diane’s business and personal savvy, the YWCA regrouped its staff, and evaluated and implemented its mission with renewed strength—both financially and with added visibility within the community.  Because of Diane’s involvement with Tribute to Women, the event has garnered community support and is now recognized as the premier recognition event for women in Maricopa County. She was the driving force behind the YWCA’s formation of an Advisory Board which acts as a positive influence to enhance fund-raising efforts and draw additional community support. On a personal note, through her many years as a board member and volunteer with the YWCA and its Tribute to Women program, Diane has formed a special bond and friendship with former member Dorothy Willey for whom the award is named. Diane is a Chandler resident.
