Anita Favela Luera
Recipient of the YWCA's
2001 Tribute to Women Award
Category: Communicator

Ten outstanding women in Maricopa County were named honorees in the YWCA’s Tribute to Women 2001 Awards.  The annual awards recognize women whose lives and accomplishments reflect the YWCA’s mission to empower women and eliminate racism.

In the category of Communicator, the honoree is Anita Favela Luera. Anita Favela Luera is the Community Relations Coordinator at KPNX-TV, Channel 12. Anita has a long history of helping to pave the way for women and minorities in broadcast journalism. She became Arizona’s first female news director when she was hired at KTVW-TV, Channel 33, a Spanish language station in Phoenix, in 1985. After a number of years as news director, Anita returned to producing specific newscasts so that she could focus on issues of importance and relevance to Valley residents, and specifically to issues that have a great impact on Hispanics. Since joining Channel 12’s Community Relations Department, Anita has been a key contributor to the station’s involvement in a number of community campaigns to help women and minorities. She assisted in the development of the on-air "One Bed, One Life" campaign which helped raise awareness and more than $1 million for domestic violence shelters. Anita was instrumental in establishing a same-day crisis phone bank on domestic violence following a tragic story of a domestic-violence slaying of a female Phoenix police officer. Her efforts to empower minorities is illustrated through her volunteer work with the Hispanic Women’s Conference, Arizona Latino Media Association and as a member of Valle del Sol’s Hispanic Leadership Advisory Board. Anita recently took on the added responsibility and leadership role to organize the National Association of Hispanic Journalists convention which will convene in Phoenix in June 2001. Anita is a Phoenix native and one of 11 children born to Mexican immigrant parents. She is proud of the fact that all 11 are college graduates. Anita is a Tempe resident.
