Recipient of the
YWCA's
2001 Tribute to Women Award
Category: Scientist/Researcher
Ten outstanding women in Maricopa County were named honorees in the YWCAs Tribute to Women 2001 Awards. The annual awards recognize women whose lives and accomplishments reflect the YWCAs mission to empower women and eliminate racism.
In the category of Scientist/Researcher, the honoree is Mary Anderson-Rowland. Mary Anderson-Rowland is Associate Dean of Student Affairs in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) at Arizona State University (ASU). She has worked to inspire women and minorities to consider careers in engineering and to provide them with opportunities to re-enter the job market in this male-dominated field. In 1993, Mary created the Women in Applied Sciences and Engineering (WISE) program at ASU. The program offers support to female engineering students and gives them a comfortable climate in which to study, socialize and take advantage of job resources, scholarships, company profiles and reference materials of particular interest to women. Mary also oversees the Universitys Office of Minority Engineering Program, and under her leadership, increased enrollment of minority engineering students from 13 percent to 17 percent. Her dedication in this area goes beyond the walls of ASU. She has shared her recruitment and retention strategies in numerous national meetings, including Frontiers in Education National Conference, the American Society for Engineering Education and the Society of Women Engineers, to name a few. Mary is tireless in her efforts to help and encourage her female engineering students. For example, she negotiated low airfares for students traveling to conferences, guided students through the graduate school application process and matched roommates for the ASU engineering dormitory program. Marys work as director of ASUs Career Change Program since 1982 has helped many students with non-technical undergraduate degrees seek a masters degree in engineering. Through her efforts, more than 80 women have returned to school, completed relevant undergraduate courses and earned their masters degrees in Industrial Engineering. She lends her time and support to many community service activities including CEAS College Diversity Committee, American Society of Engineering Educations Women in Engineering Division, and the Board of Directors of the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science. Mary is a Tempe resident.
