Several Arizonans Will Compete at the Olympics in 2000

Misty Hyman
Sport: Swimming
Born:  March 23, 1979
Residence: Mesa, AZ
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 140

Misty attended Shadow Mountain High School. Four years ago she missed a spot on the Olympic team by a fraction of a second. Now, her first place finish in in the 200 meter butterfly event at the Olympic trials guarantees her a chance to swim in Sydney. Controversy is not a stranger to Misty, who became known for her unique butterfly stroke. When swimming, Misty would be underwater for most of the length of the pool. The powers that be have now restricted the amount of time a swimmer can be underwater before starting the butterfly stroke.

Gary Hall, Jr.
Sport: Swimming
Born:  September 26, 1974
Residence: Phoenix, AZ
Height: 6'6"
Weight: 185

Gary Hall already has two silver and two gold medals from the Olympics held at Atlanta. This time he has earned his place at the Olympics with a first place finish in the 50 meter freestyle and a second-place finish in the 100 meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials. He set a new American record in the 50 meter. Not known for his shyness, Hall appeared at the competition wearing a pair of satin boxing briefs with red, white and blue stars and stripes. He then motioned a with a couple of boxing-type punches to the crowd. He will compete 

Kyle Salyards
Sport: Swimming
Born:  December 17, 1980
Residence: Tempe, AZ
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 165

Representing the Rio Salado Swim Club in Tempe, Kyle won the 200 meter breaststroke at the Olympic trials. He'll be going to Sydney. Earlier in the year he was second in the 200 meter breast stroke and sixth in the 100 meter breast stroke at the Spring Nationals. He is a previous Junior National Champion.

Klete Keller
Sport: Swimming
Born:  March 12, 1982
Residence: Phoenix, AZ
Height: 6'6"
Weight: 180

Klete will be representing Phoenix Swim Club when he swims the 400 meter freestyle at the Olympics in Sydney. He broke the American record at the trials. Klete recently graduated from Arcadia High School. Earlier in the year he was third in the 400 meter freestyle and sixth in the 200 meter freestyle at the Spring Nationals. Klete was on the 1998 National Junior team. He comes from a swimming family; both his mother and sister are swimmers.

All of us in Arizona wish these athletes successful competitions. We hope they all come back with medals, but if that is not to be, we hope they have an incredible experience and know how proud we all are that they competed.
