The people of this country were shocked today by an horrific attack on our people and two symbols of our country: The World Trade Center and The Pentagon. As the Phoenix Guide, I cannot possibly provide you with more information than the news agencies can, but I thought I would provide some links to the best coverage that is available on the Internet. If you are concerned about loved ones that may have been aboard any of the four planes that crashed today, here are the flight numbers and contact phone numbers:

Phoenix-specific news:

  • As of this writing Sky Harbor International Airport is closed and will be until at least 6p.m. today. Do not even think about going to the airport today to leave on a flight.
  • The Federal Building downtown was evacuated as a precaution at about 8:30 this morning. They do not yet know when it will reopen.
  • State offices are open.
  • Schools are open.
  • The Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant is under heightened alert.
  • Luke AFB is under heightened alert.
  • Both Bank of America and Wells Fargo employees in downtown buildings have been told they can go home.

What can we do right now? They will need a great deal of blood and donations to assist the injured. To contact the American Red Cross for more information, call at 800-HELP-NOW or 800-435-7669. The following is a list of places where blood can be donated:

The American Red Cross blood donation site is at 3707 North 7th Street, Ste 101C, Phoenix.

United Blood Services has the following locations available:
