There are two celebrations for Independence Day in Ahwatukee, one hosted by the Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce and the other by the Ahwatukee Homeowners Association. Ahwatukee is one of the urban villages of Phoenix, and is located in the south part of the city.

What is it called?

There are two side-by-side events: The Ahwatukee Star Spangled Festival & Bicycle Parade and the Red, White and Boom, a Fireworks Celebration

Where is the Ahwatukee Independence Day celebration?

The Ahwatukee Star Spangled Festival & Bicycle Parade will take place at the Ahwatukee Community Center at 4700 E. Warner Rd. in Phoenix. Red, White and Boom, a Fireworks Celebration will take place at Ahwatukee Country Club, 12432 S. 48th Street (just north of Warner Rd). They are within walking distance of one another.

When is it?

Friday, July 3, 2009. The Ahwatukee Star Spangled Festival & Bicycle Parade is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. The Red, White and Boom, a Fireworks Celebration starts at 9 p.m., with gates opening at 6 p.m.

What will happen?

Ahwatukee Star Spangled Festival & Bicycle Parade: Kids can win prizes for decorating strollers, bicycles or wagons in red, white and blue. They will parade at 6 p.m. There will be water slides, a rock wall, and free concerts by A Boy Named Sioux and Mario.

At the Red, White and Boom, a Fireworks Celebration, the Classic Rock and Blues band Blooster and the Mighty, Mighty Hot Wings and B Platinum will perform on the country club grounds.

Bring a blanket or lawn chairs to both events. People attending the event at the Community Center can watch the fireworks at the Country Club.

What does it cost?

Free admission. Free parking will be available at The Lakes Golf Course and a free shuttle from Mountain Pointe High School to the fireworks will be available. Parking will also be available in the McDonald’s strip mall lot and Bashas strip mall lot. Arrive early for parking.

There is a charge for rides/activities at the Ahwatukee Star Spangled Festival & Bicycle Parade. You can purchase discounted ride tickets at the Community Center until June 26, after that all single tickets are $1 and all day ride wrist band will be $20. At this event you may also purchase tickets for a VIP Pool Party & BBQ where you can eat hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken, beans, potato salad, chips, unlimited, iced tea, lemonade and water, have exclusive use of the Community Center pool and get a great view of the fireworks. The VIP ticket is $25 per person (children 3 and younger are free).

What else do I need to know?

No coolers, beverages or food will be allowed into the Country Club area. Bottled water will be allowed. Food and beverages will available to purchase.

48th St. between Ahwatukee Dr. and Warner will be closed from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. There will be restricted access to residents only between Elliott and Ahwatukee Drive from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
