"Millions of dogs and cats are killed every year at animal shelters, and the ONLY real solution to this problem is the spaying and neutering of family pets. To achieve this goal, animal lovers and webmasters throughout the world are embarking on a promotion to educate and increase awareness of the importance of spaying and neutering." -- Franny Sfufy, About Guide to Cats
Responsible pet owners understand the importance of spaying and neutering of pets and feral animals. Here are some resources for low-cost and free spay/neuter programs in the greater Phoenix area.
Maricopa County Animal Care and Control
The Big Fix is a campaign designed to spay and neuter pets in an effort to reduce the pet overpopulation problem in Maricopa County. There are two programs in place for Maricopa County residents:
Spay/Neuter Voucher Program
This program is designed for people who require financial assistance, although the application process does not require that you provide evidence of financial need. Spaying and neutering of pets is provided for free, and rabies shots and licensing is available at very low cost. After an application is submitted, a voucher is issued and you have 90 days to use the voucher. You have to visit one of their centers in either Phoenix or Mesa to get an application.
Neuter Scooter is the mobile spay/neuter clinic where you can obtain these same services on a first-come first serve basis. Here is more information and a schedule for Neuter Scooter.
Altered Tails has an affordable spay and neuter clinic for both dogs and cats.
Animal Defense League of Arizona
ADLA is Arizona's statewide animal protection organization that strives for education, investigation and reform on behalf of Arizona's animals. The Spay/Neuter Hotline offers a low-cost spay/neuter certificate program to the public. Cost is based on your ability to pay. Spay/Neuter Hotline is toll free: 1-866-952-SPAY
Arizona Humane Society

Cat Nip & Tuck
Cat Nip & Tuck provides "low-cost feline spay/neuter programs in an effort to stem the tide of overpopulation resulting in the daily euthanasia of countless innocent cats and kittens."
Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project is a long-term project that seeks to end pet overpopulation and euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals in shelters by providing low-cost spaying and neutering options for dogs and cats in Maricopa County. A Maddie's Fund grant reimburses participating veterinarians for spay and neuter surgeries they perform as part of the program. The Project offers low-cost sterilization for cats and dogs belonging to low-income residents (AHCCCS recipients) of Maricopa County. You can find a list of participating veterinarians and clinics at the Maddie's Project web site.
