William "Billy" G. Moore settled in Arizona in about 1880. Billy Moore called his settlement "Coldwater, Arizona" in reference to the Agua Fria river. He served as Justice of the Peace, bought land, established a stage stop, erected a saloon and a general store, and was Postmaster of Coldwater for several years until 1905. In the early 1900s, the Coldwater post office moved to the nearby Avondale Ranch. The post office soon became known as Avondale, and the name Coldwater was discontinued. Avondale, Arizona, a city just southwest of Phoenix, celebrates their history each year Billy Moore Heritage Days.
