Attending the Scottish Highland Games

Tips For an Enjoyable Experience

By Judy Hedding, About.com

The Scottish Gathering and Highland Games is an annual event. It used to be held in Mesa, Arizona and moved to Phoenix in 2008. Here are a few things you might want to keep in mind when attending the event.

Tips for Attending the Scottish Highland Games

  1. The parking lot will fill up quickly. Use METRO light rail or free lots and shuttle in.
  2. Leave your pets at home.
  3. Wear comfortable shows. There's a lot of ground to cover between events and activities. You might be walking on uneven surfaces at times.
  4. If you get there early for Pipe Bands and athletic events, dress in layers. It can be very cool in the mornings, even if it warms up later on.
  5. The nice people organizing this festival allow re-entry, so if you want to deposit extra jackets or sweaters or things that you've purchased in your car, you can do that and then return to enjoy more of the festival.
  6. You are welcome to bring blankets or folding chairs to enjoy athletic events and entertainment.
  7. If you are visiting from out-of-town the closest hotels are in central Phoenix. Arriving early or staying for a few days? Here are some other things that you can do in Phoenix.
  8. You can pick up a schedule of events at the gate of the Scottish Highland Games.
  9. The scheduling here is more of an art than a science. Times are approximate.
