Go Fishing
There are plenty of lakes close by, but if you don't want to rent a boat you can even fish in one of the many urban lakes around town. Fishing is a great way for kids to get outside in the fresh air, learn something, and allows you to have a conversation with them.
Ride a Train
If you are looking for a great day trip, a ride on the Verde Canyon Railroad is fun for everyone. Call first to make your reservation. It's about a 2 hour drive from central Phoenix to Clarkdale, where the train station is located. During peak months (and March is one of them) there are two trains per day, one in the morning and one in the early afternoon. The train ride itself takes about 4 hours, 2 hours each way. No, you don't have to get out and turn the train around--they take care of that for you!
Head North to Snow
If there has been any precipitation, there could easily be snow in March at one of our northern Arizona ski resorts. Snowboards, sleds, cross country, and downhill are all right here in Arizona just a few hours away. Check the individual ski resorts' websites or call the hot line for the current snow report.
Check the Events Calendar
During Spring Break there are always festivals or special events going on in and around Phoenix. Here's what's happening in March.
Go Bowling
Bowling is fun for everyone, and during the day it is easier to find open bowling (no leagues) than in the evening. Find a bowling alley near you and bring the kids and their friends. Remember, even if you are a 200+ average bowler, they just want to have fun!
Go to the Movies
Treat your family to a movie week -- go to a movie once a day for 5 days! Have everyone sit down (with popcorn, of course) and agree on a schedule for which movies you'll see on which days. At the end of the five days, spend some time to talk about the movies and have your own at-home award ceremony for best film, best actor and actress, best screenplay, etc. Here's where you can find movie theaters in your area.
