Walnut Canyon

And Nearby Mount Humphreys

By Judy Hedding, About.com Guide

At Walnut Canyon you can walk into the canyon and see up close how the Sinagua lived in one-room pithouses. I just still can't figure out how long it must have taken them to go and bring back enough water to these cliffs to live and farm.

As you walk on the Walnut Canyon trail, you are actually walking through the area where the Sinagua built there homes and crop storage facilities. They lived in these cliff dwellings for about 100 years. It is not known how or why they left the area.

After stopping at Walnut Canyon, you might want to take a short detour to Mount Humphreys. In the following photos you can see the view from the top of the Agassiz Peak at Mt. Humphreys, elevation about 11,500 feet. The highest point is 12,800 feet. In the winter, this is one of the most difficult slopes at Arizona Snowbowl. The photo is slightly hazy due to forest fires in the area at the time.

Enjoy these pictures of Walnut Canyon and Mount Humphreys.
