Arizona Museums Participate in Museum Month

Each May the The International Council of Museums designates a day as International Museum Day. In 2009, International Museum Day is on Sunday, May 18. Several Central Arizona Museums host special events throughout the month of May to focus attention on our wonderful museums.

Phoenix Museums With Special Events For Museum Day

  • Arizona Military Museum
    The Arizona Military Museum will celebrate Museum Month during the month of May. It will be open each weekend during May from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are greatly appreciated. The museum houses displays relating to the military history of Arizona and Arizonans who served in the military including Conquistadors, Spanish Colonial, Mexican, Arizona Territory, Indian Wars. Spanish-American War, The Border Incident (Punitive Expedition), WWI, WWII (including a special display about the Bushmasters), Korean War, Viet Nam, Desert Storm, Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, Army Air Corps, USAF, and the AZ National Guard. The museum is located on the Papago Military Reservation at 5600 East McDowell Road, Phoenix, AZ.

  • Arizona Museum of Natural History
    Arizona Museum of Natural History in Mesa is celebrating May Museum Month with a special Night at the Museum on Friday, May 8, 2009 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. See a special showing of the original Night at the Museum movie and popcorn. Admission for this special event will be reduced to $7 for adults and $4 for everyone under 18 years of age. Come in costume as your favorite character from Night at the Museum.

  • ASU Art Museum
    On Wednesday, May 13, 2009 ASU opens its museums, galleries and collections to the public for free from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There will be gallery talks and tours in some of the special facilities on campus.

  • Deer Valley Rock Art Center
    Two-for-one museum admission to celebrate International Museum Day on Tuesday, May 19, 2009. The Rock Art Center, a 47-acre nature preserve, archaeological site, and museum, protects the largest concentration of Native American rock art in the Phoenix Valley. Our interpretive trail takes visitors back 5000 years when ancient people marked boulders with thousands of petroglyphs.

  • Desert Caballeros Western Museum
    Arizona’s most Western museum offers free admission on Sunday, May 17, 2009 in observance of International Museum Day. 21 N. Frontier St., Wickenburg, AZ.

  • Heard Museum and Phoenix Art Museum
    Get 2 museums for the price of 1 at the Heard Museum and Phoenix Art Museum. Purchase admission at either the Phoenix Art Museum or the Heard and you'll receive free same-day admission to the other museum. Just show your receipt for complimentary admission to the other museum (valid only on May 16 and 17, 2009).

  • Pueblo Grande Museum
    Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park will be celebrating International Museum Day with a free admission on Saturday, May 16, 2009. The museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Pueblo Grande Museum is the site of the prehistoric Hohokam's archaeological ruins of the platfom mound, ballcourt and canal systems. In addition our outdoor interpretive trail has replicated housing and agricultural systems. Inside are three exhibit galleries and a theatre that focus on the Hohokam, archaeology, native people, and the southwest.

  • Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting
    From noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, 2008 the Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting will offer a 50% discount on admission in observance of International Museum Day. Regular adult admission is $6, but on May 18 it's just $3! Come on down and enjoy the thrilling and colorful history of Firefighting.

  • Scottsdale Historical Museum
    The Scottsdale Historical Museum will offer a 15% discount in the Museum Gift Shop on International Museum Day, May 18, 2008. The Scottsdale Historical Museum has displays on early education in Scottsdale as well as historic photographs of Scottsdale.
