On the last Monday in May people in the metro Phoenix area join with the other citizens of the United States to honor those who have given their lives during military service for our country.

Memorial Day in Avondale

The City of Avondale, in partnership with the American Legion Crandall Palmer Post 61 and the VFW Pat Tillman Memorial Post 40, will hold a sunset Memorial Day Service at the Avondale Civic Center City Hall outdoor amphitheater. Local Veteran groups and City Officials will preside over a candlelight service and tribute to veterans. There is no charge. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Memorial Day in Phoenix

The Pioneers’ Cemetery Association will be honoring those who have died in the service of their country at a ceremony at the Pioneer & Military Memorial Park. Meet with representatives from local historic organizations, tour the 1897 Smurthwaite House, take aself-guided tours of the nearby cemeteries, historical activities for children and light refreshments. Memorial Day in Tempe

A Memorial Day Luncheon will take place at the Dennis J. Cahill Senior Center, 715 W. 5th Street, Tempe. Hamburgers, watermelon, potato chips and apple pie will be served. Musical entertainment. Fee: $4 for members; $5 for non-members. Register online. Call 480-350-5214 for more information.

The Arizona Academy of the Performing Arts hosts a Memorial Day Celebration at Tempe Beach Park. Family events including food, games, entertainment, and raffles. Governor Jan Brewer plus other Arizona Politicians will be speaking during the day. The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps will debut their 2009 music. The evening will conclude with a concert including a patriotic tribute to our servicemen. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs. Admission into the event is free.

Memorial Day in Surprise

The Surprise Memorial Day Parade features floats and marching units from clubs, organizations, groups, as residents honor fallen veterans. Surprise Recreation Campus. Free. Pancake Breakfast starting at 6:30 a.m. costs $3 per person. Call for information 623-222-2000.

Memorial Day on the Salt River

Salt River Heroes = Litter Zero Memorial Day Celebration at Salt River Tubing. Live entertainment. Floaters will receive litter bags to dispose of trash as they float down the river. Beach balls and prize giveaways.

Memorial Day Bike Rally

Riders USA pays tribute to our fallen at Phoenix National Cemetery, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix. $15 Donation includes lunch and a ride pin. Pinnacle Peak and N. Cave Creek Rd.
