Scottsdale

Event: Remembering and Honoring 9/11- the 10 Year Anniversary
Date: Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at noon (Mustang Library auditorium, 10101 N. 90th St.) and Thursday, September 15, 2011 (Civic Center Auditorium, 3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd.)

The wife of the sole Arizonan killed in 9/11 will be the keynote speaker at the first in a series of Cross Cultural Communications programs. The annual series, presented by the city's Human Relations Commission, provides an opportunity to engage in civil dialogue about diversity. Donna Killoughy Bird's husband, Gary, was attending a business meeting at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, when he perished. What's changed since that unimaginable day a decade ago? How have we changed? Donna shares her compelling, emotional journey about personal strength and loss.

Event: 9/11 "In Remembrance" Concert: Brahms' Requiem

Scottsdale Musical Arts opens its season with a free concert, a performance of Brahms' masterpiece Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem). The work was performed by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus just days after the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Donations will be accepted to benefit the 100 Club of Arizona, which assists families of fire or public safety workers who were injured or killed.

Event: Arizona 9/11 Remembrance & National Day of Service Event

The city is paying tribute to those who lost their lives and to the heroes who responded to the catastrophic events of 9/11. The Scottsdale 9/11 Day of Remembrance is a a free community event. Scheduled activities include a reading of the names followed by the evening ceremony featuring a keynote speaker, city dignitaries, a candlelight vigil, and patriotic music. The reading of the names is scheduled to begin in the Atrium at 1 p.m., followed by the ceremony at 6 p.m. in the Virginia G. Piper Theater. A variety of static displays will be open to the public starting on Sept. 8, 2011. Exhibits will include a 9/11 Memorial Wall with 2,996 full-color, 4x6 inch memorial cards, with biographical information and a photograph of each of the fallen victims, and the National Unity Flag, nearly three-stories high and signed by the entire U.S. Senate in 2002.

Tempe

Event: 9-11 Healing Field
Date: September 9 - 11, 2011 from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The Valley of the Sun Exchange Clubs Foundation and the City of Tempe present this 8th annual event, where nearly 3,000 American flags will fly in the park – one for every person who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks on our nation on Sept. 11, 2001. Join community leaders, public safety members, neighbors and other valley citizens for a walk of remembrance through the memorial. There will also be a brief commemoration ceremony that will include a presentation of colors, music, prayer and the reading of the names of the first responders who gave their lives on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 5:46 a.m., the same time that the first plane struck the World Trade Center. Then, beginning at 7:15 a.m. and lasting into the afternoon, the public is invited to join in the reading of all of the victims’ names. A candlelight vigil with music, prayer and guest speakers will occur at 7 p.m. The United Blood Services bloodmobile will be on-site to conduct blood drives on Saturday, Sept. 10, and Sunday, Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. To make an appointment, register at www.bloodhero.com and enter “9/11” as the sponsor code. Walk-in donors are also welcome.
